I'm pleased that at long last I have a match with the same haplogroup as me at FTDNA. At 37-4, and Big Y 13 OF 663,It's not the closest of matches. However I had almost given hope  of getting an E-BY5234 match. I have emailed that person.I hope he replies.

Anyone else here test with BritainsDNA?

I did the Chromo2 and the Redhead test back in 2014. Chromo2 found that I am R1b-S524 (DF41), which was about as far as things went back then, and my Redhead test showed that I am a carrier of one copy of the red hair variant Arg160Trp (aka R160W, rs1805008 T).

Fortunately, I had the forethought to have BDNA send me a printed hard copy of my results, since BDNA is now out of business and no longer maintains a web site.

Old ruins and abandoned places have always tickled the imagination. They’ve also been a primary source for local legends across the centuries. Ireland, thanks to its long and rich history, is full of such ruins, whether they be  castles, churches, abbeys or fortresses. Situated in County Antrim,  Northern Ireland , Bonamargy Friary is one such dilapidated site.

I'd like to continue this thread in its third incarnation here, after it was started by me on Anthrogenica and continued by my good friend Orentil on the original GenArchivist. I hope we'll use this space to post new discoveries and discuss subjects of all kinds from archaeological artefacts to mythology and literature. I hope it will span many periods from the Bronze Age cultures that preceded the Iron Age and Proto-Germanic, to the Migration Period and the Icelandic sagas.

I'll kick things off with some news from Jomfruland in Norway that I saw today. Although they don't say so in this BBC article, the object on the right in the first image looks like it's an example of the classic Viking era "tortoise brooch":

This is a continuation of my "Help me solve a family mystery thread" from anthrogenica.com started back in 2014:

Summary: After 44 years of personal research and 9 years of genetic testing, I learned the identity of my patrilineal great great grandfather.  On Oct 8th 2021, a FTDNA 111 marker test result helped identify him as Wilfred Charles Atkins (1866-1897).  This line goes back 2 more generations to a William Atkins b. 1812 in Wicklow, Ireland (my current patrilineal brick wall).  His son Charles (my great great great grandfather) was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1838.  In 1841 and 1851, William's occupation was listed as railroad police constable.  In 1861 his occupation is railway ticket collector.  I have no information about William or Charles prior to 1841 in Ireland, but William's children were baptized in an Anglican church in London, in the 1840s, so I'm assuming he was working class Anglo-Irish.

While there were at least 3 Anglo-Irish Atkins lines in Cork, Ireland, none of their descendants are members of the ADKINS/ATKINS FTDNA Project.

Because police constable was considered a working class occupation, and the above Anglo-Irish Atkins lines were landed gentry, I've doubted my line descends from one of these lines.  However, I recently came across this article, which may mean I need to reconsider the possibility.

My thinking has been that FGC12378> FGC47869> FGC12401 originated near the Rhine, North of the Alps, with the Italian/Hungarian FGC12378> FGC47869> FGC12401> BY5698> BY33575 line branching off this core group and heading east during the Hallstatt or La Tene period e.g. the Boii tribe; with other members of FGC12401> BY5698 and the FGC12401> FGC12384 line eventually moving North into Britain in the Late Iron age or Roman period e.g. Treveri auxiliaries.

Another possibility is during the Iron Age, both of these FGC12401 lines had moved from near the Rhine to the Pannonia region (includes present day Hungary and Northern Serbia)and arrived in Britain during the Roman period.


Then again, the reverse scenario could also be true.  A Gaulish Roman Auxiliary unit in Britain was transferred to Pannonia. 

In the 2nd century AD 20% of all Roman Military personnel were in Britain and Pannonia.  Undoubtedly there were personnel rotations between the 2 areas.  It is known that 2 Pannonian alae (cavalry) and 5 cohorts (infantry) served in Britain, the first arriving in 103 AD. www.jstor.org/stable/20186869

We know of a Celtic man from Durocortorum (Reims, France) was buried in Pannonia.

If we approach this from present to the past (reverse of the above approach), the average number of SNPs from present day testers to FGC12401 is 32 SNPs. This was derived from:
1. FGC12401>FGC47875 average is 34 SNPs (BY5698 branch avg is 28 SNPs (34 & 22 SNPs for the 2 branches), FGC12384 branch avg is 40 SNPs (42 & 38 SNPs for the 2 branches. Average of 28 & 40 is 34 SNPs)
2. FGC12401>FTD126929 is 30 SNPs
3. Average of 34 & 30 SNPs is 32.
32 SNPs x 83 years per SNP = 2656 years, minus 1950 AD = FGC12401 TMRCA: 706 BC.
So going from known ancient dna to recent results is 648 BC, and going from present day to ancient results is 706 BC for FGC12401. The average of these 2 results is 677 BC.

Maritime Viewscapes and the Material Religion of Levantine Seafarers

For ancient peoples, travel was profoundly liminal. Voyaging at sea was doubly liminal, leaving the safety of land and existing in a state of in-betweenness on the waters. To mitigate these thresholds, Levantine seafarers developed specialized religious ideas and practices not shared by their counterparts who never left dry land.

Two types of deities were vital for mariners, ones whose attributes controlled storms and others that affected wayfinding. In the Levantine pantheon, the storm god, Ba‘al, was a patron of seafarers. Marine deities, such as the Phoenician “Poseidon”, also had tutelary relationships (Figure 1). The goddesses Asherah and Tanit played vital roles in the protection of navigation, perhaps because of their link to the new, crescent moon (Figure 2). The god Melqart’s importance to seafarers is verified by numerous data, perhaps as a patron of commerce or voyaging.

Seafarers gave propitiations at harbor temples to honor their divine patrons, some unique to the sailors’ world. Votives included objects fashioned for rituals such as model ships, miniature rudders, and nautical graffiti, and ritualized artifacts such as anchors, anchor stocks, and steering oars. This is verified by nautical finds from temples at Byblos, Ugarit, Tell Sukas, and Kition-Bamboula, as well as Coria del Río and Carambolo in Spain. Temples in harbor cities may have also served as navigational aids while on the water …

To revise my opinion in the old thread, Imo "Ligurian" peoples originating with Rhone and Alpine Beakers, Polada Culture. 
"West Italic" (Ligure, Latin, Faliscan, *Venetic?) category seems plausible, contrast with Osco-Umbrian (East Italic) from the LBA Middle Danube. 

Spread of Z56/Z43 subclades (among other U152 and L2 branches) from the Upper Rhine to North Italy, SE France, Tuscan/Latium coasts, and  other Mediterranean coastal areas across SW Europe (Incl Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily etc...), and especially the Riviera 

Implications/connections with Golasecca, Terramare, and Proto-Villanovan Cultures.
