Good Old BritainsDNA, Gone but Not Forgotten
#1
Starting this thread over here at the new platform. I think it's worth doing.

Anyone else here test with BritainsDNA?

I did the Chromo2 and the Redhead test back in 2014. Chromo2 found that I am R1b-S524 (DF41), which was about as far as things went back then, and my Redhead test showed that I am a carrier of one copy of the red hair variant Arg160Trp (aka R160W, rs1805008 T).

Fortunately, I had the forethought to have BDNA send me a printed hard copy of my results, since BDNA is now out of business and no longer maintains a web site.

Here are two graphics BDNA sent me with my results.

[Image: Chromo2-Regional-Distribution.jpg]Since I haven't posted this for a LONG time thought it a good idea (hopefully it will work : )

To be clear this is the complete Y haplogroup data from BritiansDNA website

Wow! There's some old, obsolete stuff in that table.

Here's the mtDNA certificate I got from good old BDNA. Btw, I say "good old BDNA" because I actually miss BritainsDNA, and because I think Dr. Jim Wilson, with whom I exchanged a number of emails over the years, is a great guy. It was a shame to lose that company.

I didn't realize they drilled that far down

It was a real shame they didn't do more maps, though I doubt there would have been enough R-DF49 x M222 to make much sense I'd still liked to have seen it and IMO they really missed a trick not providing that data for the larger clades of L21.

That was from the Chromo2, which, for the time, was the most advanced thing going. I'm not sure they didn't have frequency maps, but they didn't send me any hard copies.

The distribution data I supplied earlier was all of it, I found where they were keeping the info on their website and downloaded the lot. Also got international distribution data but that was repeated scientific papers.

That's odd. Funny that BDNA would do a nice map of the frequency of red hair variant carriers in Britain and Ireland but never do one of Y-DNA haplogroup distribution.

Agree that's odd. In their defence they did supply each tester with a breakdown of their subclade within Britain. I remember poring over mine in those days when little information was available in general for my Y line. Scotland and England were divided into several units but Wales was a single one.

One reason I miss BritainsDNA, besides the fact that Dr. Jim Wilson is a great guy, is that it is nice to have an alternative to FTDNA to confirm (or dispute) one's Y-DNA results. Don't get me wrong. I am a faithful son and loyal customer of FTDNA, but it's nice to get a second opinion and have your results confirmed by an independent set of experts.

I mentioned a couple of posts back that it was nice to have BritainsDNA as a second opinion on one's DNA test results. BritainsDNA confirmed my Y-DNA results as far as S524 (R1b-DF41), which was as far as things went back then, and my FGS mtDNA results as U5a2c3a. It's a real confidence builder to get two companies, with two different sets of scientific experts, to confirm your DNA test results.

We don't really have that now, since 23andMe doesn't go anywhere near as far as FTDNA does with Y-DNA results or with mtDNA results.
