On the subject of the posting designations, I’m not keen on the current set-up. “Posting freak” might make sense for someone who reaches that level in a week but it would be nonsense in the case of someone else who reaches the 750 posts over 10 years.

Likewise, someone could reach “senior member” level by posting 250 pieces of pointless guff over a short period of time, while others among the best quality posters here might only share a pearl of wisdom once every few months.

I don’t see a need for different categories at all given that we can all see other members’ joining dates and judge them by the quality of their posts. I’m an egalitarian at heart, and for me “member” would work for everyone across the board.

It is actually impressive. I thought it would take years before someone reached "Posting Freak," which was originally "Posting God" at 600 posts, but I changed the name and the number. We can also make personalized designations, so you can remain as a "Member" forever if you want to, we can explore that in many ways.
Mine is unique, though. :-)

Thanks Albruic. That's good to know. I was by no means referring to or criticising our first "posting freak" Rich, by the way. It's rare to combine quantity and quality, but he does it. He always did on Anthrogenica too. I still miss the heyday of his Miscellaneous Welsh Odds and Ends thread in particular. Many of us enjoyed some great discussions there on a vast range of subjects.

I'm a "posting freak" no doubt because I'm retired, don't have to work, and have extra time to spend on the genetic genealogy hobby. Plus I think chatting here is kind of fun, and I learn a lot.

As JonikW said, it's great to have you around.

Since this is a site often dealing with modern and ancient dna, post numbers could be associated with different time periods

0-99:  Modern Age
100-199:  Middle Ages
200-499:  Antiquity
500-999:   Iron Age
1000-1999:   Bronze Age
2000-2999:  Copper Age
3000-3999:  Eneolithic
4000-4999-Neolithic
5000-9999:  Mesolithic
10000-Infinity:  Paleolithic

or something like that

Personally, I think we should drop all of the posting categories and just leave everyone as a Member. We can already see how many posts and threads someone has submitted. So the categories are kind of redundant anyway.  Plus, the five star member designation has a nice clean look to it, so I would leave it as it is. As for the Haplogroups, it would be nice if people added them to their Avatars. Along with whatever autosomal or ancestral information they may have. Which they can also put into their signatures. Of course, that’s a personal decision that everyone can decide on their own but it is nice to know. Especially when people are running calculators.

Fully agree. That reminds me, I need to fill in the area under my avatar because I'd like to get my paternal-side grandmother's mtDNA haplogroup in there, like I had on Anthrogenica. The more disclosure the better from my point of view, plus I'm glad I know it and wish I could have discussed it with her.

Regarding the number of threads, I was thinking about how our posting patterns have changed a lot over the years. Most of us used to post regularly on AG at one time about our autosomal results from the big commercial providers, especially after Living DNA joined the game.

It now looks like we've all done the subject to death (I certainly feel I've got nothing much left to learn there except in comparison to ancient samples) but it will be interesting to see how that evolves as we get more first-time testers who were never on AG. I hope those enthusiasts of tomorrow find a home here too.
