Turkish DNA | Turkic and Greek DNA in modern Turkish people.
#1
Here are my Turkic/Greek averages for most of Turkey. At the end is a nice summary. Don't get confused at the fits at the end, it's below 1 because I had to combine a lot of different local groups in order for the summary to work, otherwise the fits would be terrible as Turkish people don't descent from 1 monolithic local population as some Turks may like to believe. Our local ancestors were pretty diverse to begin with. That's also why I labelled it as "Local" instead of Greek, Armenian, etc.

I also added 2 models for some because the fits weren't so great. So you can decide which makes most sense to you historically.

Summary:

Here's a list of what makes up the averages used in my calculations:

WestByzantine_Greek contains: Byzantine_Nicaea, Byzantine_Stratonikeia, Byzantine_Samantaş, Byzantine_Balikesir

Medieval_Turkic is Karakhanid, as it gives the best fits and seems to be Oghuz in admixture, at least. Kipchaks are way too western for us Turks and the Karluk sample is bad as well as it has more Iranian than the rest. The Turkish DNA Project is also starting to use Karakhanid instead of Kipchak and Karluk, which just proves we are on the right track when it comes to Karakhanid being a good Turkic source for us Turkish people.

Turkey_West contains Aydin, Balikesir, Muğla, Bolu, Izmir, Denizli, Isparta, Burdur, Antalya, Uşak, Istanbul, Eskişehir, Kütahya, Manisa.

Turkey_Central contains: Ankara, Konya, Aksaray, Kayseri, Çorum, Kırıkkale, Çankırı, Nevşehir, Sivas

Turkey_North contains: Karabük, Giresun, Amasya, Tokat, Sinop, Kastamonu.

Turkey_Northeast contains: Trabzon, Rize, Bayburt, Gümüşhane.

Turkey_South contains: Mersin, Adana, Karaman, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep.

This is just an overview of the Turkic DNA amongst modern Turkish people. The bulk of which is concentrated in the Aegean provinces.

Despite the fact that the West has the highest on average percentage of Turkic, they still derive most of their ancestry from their local populations.
The Turkic will  decrease as more Turks are tested and taken into the average. Muğla and Bolu, for example, are outliers that are 40% Turkic. If more people from these areas test and submit their results, it will definitely sink as the Muğla and Bolu sample are a handful of people, while Aydin, for example, is around 30 people, so that sample will give us a better idea of the average Turkic input than Muğla with its 5 outlier Yörüks in it.

Here's a Qpadm study from the Turkish DNA Project.

https://imgur.com/a/yCmqZ9s

They only made one for western Turks, but it's in line with my calculations. They used Aydin and Balikesir averages for this as it contains way more people than other samples. So, it seems to be accurate.

Edit: I tried adding the images, but it didn't work, so I just added the links. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Interesting thread. Could you share the coordinates you used for the model? And for example, what the is the difference between WestByzantine_Greek, Roman_Greek_Hattusa, Medieval_Greek_Bogazkoy, etc.? Which Bogazkoy is that even? Wikipedia says there are multiple.

This is medieval Greek Bogazköy from the calculator.

I'll post models of Anatolian Greeks in the future. All in all there are stark differences between the groups. That's why Turks vary so much. "Anatolians" were never 1 monolithic ethnic group.

Could you share the coords of all pops you used? Also, why Bogazkoy and Byzantine_Central and not West_Byzantine, is there such a stark difference?

Ironically, West Turkey, the part of the country farthest from Central Asia, has the most Turkic DNA. I wonder what the percentage of Turkic haplogroups are-there would be C, N, Q, and some clades of R1a-Z93 (the others would be Kurdish).

The minority is Turkic.

Here are ancient to medieval Anatolian haplogroups. Most Turks will have these medieval Byzantine haplos.

"The others would be Kurdish."

No, not really. They're Balkan or just Turkic. Western Turks don't have an Iranian element to them.

My haplogroup, for example, is from the Balkans too. I have no recent Balkan ancestry, so it's from a medieval Balkan Slav that was settled in my area. Many people don't know how many Slavs were actually settled in Anatolia (me neither for that matter), but it was many. All our medieval Balikesir samples are half Balkan Slavic (Ottoman Balikesir is 1/4th Balkan Slavic), for example. Ottoman Nicaea also carries a Slavic haplogroup.

Balikesir Greeks carried R as well. The only male Balikesir sample from the Ottoman period we have carried R-S1734 haplogroup, so they're either Turkic or Balkan. Some Mycenaeans also carried R, btw.

There was one straight-up Ukranian-like sample from the Northwest I think, and Northwest still has a higher Steppe compared to the rest of the country. I wonder if the Slavic migrations are related to that.

J-PH1795 is also related to Turkic migrations.

Ah, yes, the Nicaean Slav sample. Yeah, interestingly, that one is closer to pure Slavs than Balkan Slavs. So some of the Slavs that were settled in Anatolia weren't mixed with the paleo-balkan peoples.

Note, when I say "the others would be Kurdish", I mean the samples would be from Kurdish people, not that it was indicative of Kurdish influx into the Turkish population. There are other ethnicities in Turkey, the Caucasian Laz for example, who would have a different autosomal profile than Turks from more monoethnic areas. The northeast, where the Laz live, are an extreme outlier in these samples, which otherwise average 75% local/25% Turkic.

This is for western Turks. I actually listed all samples anyway with their names, so just look them up on illustrativedna.com if you mean a specific one.
Could you share all you used, so also for other parts of Anatolia? I'm curious. Btw, why are you even using that many different Byzantine era pops for different regions of Anatolia?

Btw what even is Turkey_West that you used? The distances I'm getting are barely passable (and into the zone of invalid imo). Sorry about the formatting:

Target,                    Distance,        WestByzantine_Greek,    Medieval_Turkic
Turkish_Northwest, 0.01505590,   70.4,                             29.6
Turkish_Southwest, 0.01501872,   70.0,                             30.0
Average,                  0.01503731,   70.2,                            29.8

And here is one with a Colchis-like sample in the model (I'm not suggesting there is Caucasian-admix necessarily, rather something generally eastern, just that only Byzantine Greek doesn't seem enough):

Target Distance WestByzantine_Greek Medieval_Turkic Colchis-like_TUR_BlackSea_Samsun_Ancient_B
Turkish_Northwest 0.00989572 60.6 28.8 10.6
Turkish_Southwest 0.01189951 62.4 29.2 8.4
Average 0.01089761 61.5 29.0 9.5

See the massive difference in distance. Or with Hasanlu_IA:

Target Distance WestByzantine_Greek Medieval_Turkic IRN_Hasanlu_IA
Turkish_Northwest 0.01271794 59.2 28.0 12.8
Turkish_Southwest 0.01158726 54.0 27.6 18.4
Average 0.01215260 56.6 27.8 15.6
