Unusual Haplogroup: C-F1699 in Sri Lanka?

Hey all,

Recently someone has contacted me about their 23andme results. They were surprised to have received the C-F1699 paternal haplogroup, as to their knowledge their entire ancestry comes from Sri Lanka (specifically they are from the Sinhalese ethnic group). This is definitely unusual since C-F1699 is characteristic of Mongolian and other Northeastern Asian populations. 

I do recall someone from Bangladesh mentioned getting this haplogroup as well on the old Anthrogenica thread. Does anyone have any knowledge on how this haplogroup could have arrived in Sri Lanka?

There is a subclade of C-F1699 that has long been known to have some presence among modern South Asians: C-L1373 > C-F3447 > C-F1699 > C-M8574 > C-Y11990 > C-Z22425.

C-Z22425 is not associated with present-day Mongols. Its MRCA with C-ZQ354 in C-Y11990 is estimated to have existed 9300 (95% CI 10700 <-> 7900) ybp according to YFull or 9,003 (95% CI 10,846 - 7,461) ybp according to FTDNA.

The TMRCA of extant members of C-Z22425 is 4600 (95% CI 5700 <-> 3600) ybp according to YFull or 4,873 (95% CI 5,998 - 3,947) ybp according to FTDNA. The C-Z22425 > C-BY56585 subclade (TMRCA 1,025 [95% CI 1,399 - 737] ybp according to FTDNA) has been found in individuals from present-day Germany and the United States. As I recall, most (or all) of the American representatives of this clade are recorded to be descendants of immigrants from the German Rhineland-Palatinate (e.g. Hunsrück) or Baden-Württemberg; in other words, it appears to be a branch with an origin in the medieval era in what is now southwestern Germany.

Members of C-Z22425(xBY56585) include YF002808 from present-day Jammu and Kashmir, India in addition to Xikakandasayi 4 from Qiemo County, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China (Late Iron Age, ca. 254 - 406 CE), located between the south(east)ern edge of the Taklamakan Desert and the northern foothills of the Tibetan Plateau.
