Knuckle dragger? Your Neanderthal DNA at 23andMe
#1
How much Neanderthal DNA do you have at 23andMe, at least relative to the rest of their customers?

I have more than 95% of the other 23andMe customers. Whoa!

Kind of cool.

I get

You have more Neanderthal DNA than 29% of other customers.

Mine's is almost half of my parents' percentage (45% and 58% for Mom and Dad). So I wonder how accurate this is. I guess by random chance I got more of their non Neanderthal dna.

I do have more German ancestry than either parent. My evil twin (on gedmatch) would have been more Celtic (French and Isles) than me.

But I would suspect that Neanderthal would be spread out on various chromosome segments, unlike my German ancestry which would be concentrated on a few segments.

I'm not really sure how they arrive at their Neanderthal percentage re other customers. I've just always enjoyed the fact that I came out (from my perspective) so well on that scale.

At any rate, none of us really has much Neanderthal DNA. It's just kind of fun.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to poo poo the thread…just struck me as odd how different my percentage was from both parents. Maybe this in fact a common occurrence.

I've only had my parents tested with FTDNA's Family Finder (and my dad had the old Genographic Project test way back when), so I don't know how they would come out on 23andMe's Neanderthal thing.

Hey JMcB!

You have more Neanderthal DNA than 34% of other customers.

You inherited a small amount of DNA from your Neanderthal ancestors. Out of the 7,462 variants we tested, we found 229 variants in your DNA that trace back to the Neanderthals.

All together, your Neanderthal ancestry accounts for less than ~2 percent of your DNA.

And according to the the now defunct and mysterious Ethnogene results:

Modern Human 97.4%

Neanderthal 1.4%

Denisovan 1.2%

I am not very Neanderthal, I suppose.

Hey <yanassini>!
You have more Neanderthal DNA than 8% of other customers.

You inherited a small amount of DNA from your Neanderthal ancestors. Out of the 7,462 variants we tested, we found 203 variants in your DNA that trace back to the Neanderthals.

All together, your Neanderthal ancestry accounts for less than ~2 percent of your DNA.

My friend from North Lebanon scored 63%, but not nearly as high as yours. While this is not the most accurate 23andMe tool, it certainly is funny to mess with.

I'm 19%.
Dad 18%, his brother my uncle is 84%
Mom around 50%
Sister 74%

I suppose inheriting different X chromosomes between siblings could explain the disparity?
