Finally, the study's conclusion of distant ancestry with the Maratha is very questionable. Because the Maratha themselves cluster the closest with South Indian populations on PCAs. This suggests that the Maratha are largely descended from a Dravidian speaking South Indian like population, but with additional minority ancestry from the north acquired during the historic period. This fits with the linguistic and anthropological evidence (Dravidian toponyms in Maharashtra and the Maratha following Dravidian kinship practices, just like the Sinhalese). This is the likely explanation for why they share relatively more IBD segments cumulatively with the Maratha. Although overall, they still share the most IBD segments, both large and small with Tamils.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mQueowV...sp=sharing The biggest question I have is what is the biggest source of non-south Indian ancestry amongst the Sinhalese? Is it Bengali or Gujarati? Oriya? Bihari? Marathi? Bear in mind that the ancient migrations would have taken place in the BC period, before Bengalis received large south east asian ancestry.
