Tyrol-Trentino, Bavaro/Austrian MA, Rhaeto-Romance (Ladin)
#1
Discussions about admixture in Tyrol incl. Trentino, the Rhaeto-Romance area (Ladin, Romansh, Friulian) and sometimes heavy Medieval Bavarian/Austrian settlement in North Italy (with the isolated examples of Cimbrian, Mòcheno, Sappada, Sauris, Timau): Clearing of forests to establish new farms / settlements in the plateaus above the valley floor.
From some years ago by me: South Tyrol: population, ethnic groups and historical migrations & Tyrolean DNA admixture and genetic structure
Copy of AG thread from 08-23-2022 to share some of my comparisons and findings.

Comparison of 13 selected K36simScaled samples to Global25_PCA_modern_scaled (July 2022)
7 South Tyrol and 3 Trentino - 1 UpperAustria-Salzburg and 1 Upper-Bavaria (as Proxy for North Tyrol), Ladin and East Tyrol missing.
Averages included until 0.6.
Irish, Greek_Corinthia and Scottish are the major surprises as there should be no known relevant migration in either direction in the last milennia. Likely similarity with ancient source populations (NW-Celtic and Greek-Archaic, see other or future posts).
Less then expected: Austrian, Italian_Trentino-Alto-Adige (likely by uncomplete reference set).

Since the used South Tyrol samples are Eurogenes K36 Sims (Allelocator - Eurogenes K36 to Global G25 Converter vertical version - author of the script: Vbknethio) and I have seen pretty big values/placement shifts when comparing to proper G25 values, I'm looking for the nearest results with official values.
The Italian Samples from Isolated Populations in Anagnostou et-al 2016 are most important for this. They contain Austro-Bavarian speaking minorities from Sappada n=26, Sauris n=11, Timau n=32, Cimbrian-Lessinia n=36.
Even if they are not included in Global25_PCA_modern_scaled.txt thanks to

The Anagnostou et-al 2016 Austro-Bavarian speaking minorities are very similar to South Tyrol or other Alpine samples probably mixed from similar source populations (Germano-Celtic from the North, Celto-Romance in the Alps - mainly in the Southern Arc). For example some Aosta samples are near. Even if the detailed source populations differ (Cisalpine Celts, Noricum Celts, Rhaeto-Etrusco-Roman, Veneti) the combination seems to give very similar profiles on the PCA's. Even two mixed ancient Longobards in Hungary and Piedmont fit that model very well. South Tyrol (Eisacktal at least) should not have significant Longobard ancestry. The Austro-Bavarian language isles maybe a little more trough admixture in loco, but probably also low.
The nearest Global25 scaled samples I have found are (my edited name description, capitals means proper G25 values):

Y-DNA frequencies
https://popgen.us/tyrol-dna/tyrolean-dna...structure/
https://genetische-genealogie.popgen.us/...e-gebiete/ (German)

So unfortunately Coia 2013 is the last substantial contribution. Now the focus has shifted to ancient DNA with a lot less samples, but on the other hand most get deep res sequences including the Y, so the terminal placement is much more accurate.

Attempt to find the relevant population influences for Tyrol from LBA V1.1:

Post-Ötzi / Rhaeti (proxies)
- Any LBA/IA along the Adige and Inn river / Central Alps
- IA Southwestern Alps/Padan (Cisalpine Gaul/Celts) including Leponti, Insubres and Cenomani
- Etruscan (Northern)
- Adriatic Veneti (Northeast Italy) and IA Balkan Northeast / Illyria and as well Noricum and IA Pannonia / Dacian
- Other interesting IA populations like Ligures, Messapic

Distant IA, Greek and Roman time influences
- Old Greek / Minoan type LBA/IA and IA West Anatolia
- Levant: Phoenicia and other IA including Armenia / North Fertile Crescent

Migration period and early Medieval influences
- Goths, Lombards, Alamanni, Baiuvarii, Franks mainly as conquerors and nobility rulers/administration
- Huns, Avars - Steppe/Asia proxies 400-700 CE

High and Late Medieval and Habsburg influences
- Upper Rhine and Upper Danube settlers for monasteries, archdiocesan and nobility - probably the most influential influence in numbers!?
- Slavs (Slovenes/Croats, Czechs/Slowaks, etc.) and other Non-Germans
- NE & Central Italy (Piedmont, Tuscany)

Before I look for fitting G25 values I'm interested to refine it. Multiple layers from the same or similar source populations and similarity in mainly North/South admixture in adjacent areas make it difficult.

How close genetically are Venetians to South Tyroleans? Do they resemble more their neighbors to the north or the Piedmontese?

My impression is the historical Tyrol area is very diverse as many valleys with individual settler history and/or older isolation exist. I have no proof but think in other Alpine areas with complicated geographic situation and population history this might be similar.
For Trentino there are enough samples (G25 official and custom results) to prove a vast diversity from broad overlapping with Lombardy and as well broad overlapping with Veneto and also Friuli. Some of the German influenced isles (Cimbrians etc) are shifted in direction of the Austro-Bavarian cluster.
For the South Tyroleans I only have results from the Central part with early and likely strong South German (new) settlements in High and Late Medieval time. So strong similarity to the Austro-Bavarian/Alemanni regions. Those Central South Tyroleans are so far indistinguishable from Western Austria (so North and East Tyrol and likely Salzburg and part of Carinthia, maybe even close to Vorarlberg and Bodensee).
The few Dolomite Ladin results similar to Cimbrians/Zimbern and the other German isles (Mòcheno/Bersntal, Sappada/Plodn, Sauris/Zahre, Timau/Tischlbong) seem to be in a cluster between Trentino and South Tyrol, so despite different history the admixture seems to be similar.
Aostans (shifted in direction of Switzerland/France) are nearer to the Ladin/GermanIsles cluster then Piedmont. Unfortunately I do not have Grisons/Graubünden, Salzburg and Carinthia results to compare and also Bavarian etc. results would help.
Most likely having ancient DNA from Medieval time from all those places in relevant numbers could help to refine but IMHO the used SNPs for both scientific and genetic genealogists (G25) calculator/admix comparisons are too low in numbers and much more and recent (more seldom) SNPs would be needed to gain proper insights regarding the population history/relations in the last 2000 years.

I was expecting you to say that. Even though I am mixed 99% of my documented Italian side is Venetian, yet, I plot closer to Piemonte/Aosta and Trento than Venetians. The same western shift happens to my mother while my great-aunt is the only one to always plot closer to Venetians but that's expected since her father was born in Tezze Sul Brenta. Her mother is from Ferrara. In the late 1800s the population seemed to move a lot, I have documents in my paternal family of 4 children born in 4 different towns a few tens of kilometers apart from eachother. It also seems that they were always migrating from west to east, never the opposite or to the north. It is hard to find samples from that time and so much moving makes me think about their origin, if they were really from the place they were born or they were just coming from somewhere else.
I still need to get my father tested but I am the only one in my maternal family that is more northern oriented, my uncle for example is closer to Emilia Romagna..
I believe the south of the Alps had a very changing aspect happening in the late 1800s and as you said, only medieval samples may enlightnen us.
At the time, the Austro-Hungarian empire was entering Italy and I think that made some people leave their homes, the same way Napoleon made Iberians flee to the Americas some years earlier.
At the same time, in the western side of the Alps the Dutchy of Savoy was ruling over Aosta and other French territories over the west side of Piemonte, do you know any migration in those areas during that period? Also it seems that Italians left their mark in southeast France more than the French left in northwest Italy, I think that is interesting and may indicate the oposite of what I said, some families in that region stayed there instead of moving east.
I would say there were more people moving from north of the Alps to southeast than the opposite, what do think about that?

I agree with that. Even though 23andMe is probably not perfect in differentiating Southern German from North Italian, I noticed that while people from Salzburg, Vorarlberg and other Austrian federal states get practically no Italian at all in the newer ancestry composition results (never more than low single digits if any), people from Tyrol and Carinthia usually get it, most of the time in the very low double digits (say about 10 % on average).

Keep in mind that kind of between the German and Italian population is a third one, the Romansh, which might be sometimes more in between and the main reason for German speakers in Tyrol and Carinthia getting low, yet still significant "Italian".

I would say there were more people moving from north of the Alps to southeast than the opposite, what do think about that?

While there is well documented migration from Latin-descended speaking areas to the North (East), such as soldiers, craftsmen and administrative/low-nobility moving to big cities in Austria but also Bavaria and Württemberg in the last 500 years, this was certainly a minority in terms of numbers.

It seems most of the not too steep slopes above the Alpine valleys were only cleared of woods after Antiquity, and the origins of those settlers (and their descendants) are the most influential numerically. In the case of many such "new" villages in Tyrol, immigration from the overpopulated Southern German urban areas seems the best candidate when looking at the admixture profiles, in my humble opinion. This was also mainly connected to areas of noble and monastery influence and networks. Exceptions certainly occur, possibly driven by events like the plague or other unplanned events. The Venetian Republic was certainly a major power also influencing the hills and valleys rising from the Venetian plain into the Dolomites, and through their vast network of colonies some late exotic newcomers could have moved inland. There is some Y-DNA hinting at that, but so far not enough samples/resolution is available to determine when before the High Middle Ages those came into NE Italy.

Regarding Aosta/Piedmont and the Rhone area, I must say I am no expert and would need to study the argument further.

I was only surprised that the few and heterogeneous Aostan PCA positions (maybe Walser Germans contributing to late diversity) did not all fall in the expected area in between Piedmont and Swiss/Rhone Valley/SE French results.

the paper on the two cimbrian villages featured some interesting insights
eg in the supp fig4 both shared more drift with roman italians than with medieval or modern italians; which kind of suggests that the latin/romanic substrate in the eastern alps could be more ancient than recent

Are there different Romansh/Ladin etc. samples around to compare with? I really think they should be closest.

For what it's worth, there's an establishment known as "Haus Buchhammer" in Fiss that I've had on my bucket list for a while now. First because it looks like a cool place for a short holiday, even though I don't ski; but also because I share the same surname. Well, sort of.

"Buchhammer" was the surname of my 5th great grandfather who brought the name to America in 1749, but after just a couple of generations it morphed into its present American form "Bookhammer". While my ancestor came as part of the great Palatine migration, it's been suggested by some that before the family was in Germany it was in Austria. I'm told that the ending "-hammer" rather than "-heimer" likely reflects the Austro-Bavaria dialect, in any case.

My Y haplogroup is pretty rare: R-Y137476, which is the offspring of R-YP619 (which in turn is a branch of R-L1029).

FTDNA shows shows only 2 tested descendants of this haplogroup, with an ancestral location of Germany for one of us (me), and Hungary for the other.

Here a G25 Euro PCA with some of the the things I said plotted. For Italian regions and the GermanIslesItaly (Cimbrian etc.) I only included averages because otherwise the overlapping would make the PCA unreadable. Even the small GermanIslesItaly seem to have more/broader diversity then the official G25 Austrian samples plotted here.
As said the diversity of SouthTyrol is not shown here by the samples I have (all Eisack valley samples except one more mixed and a second one a Mix of South/North/East-Tyrol)

this looks more that the german speaking isolates are intermediate to north italy (veneto/trentino) and tyrol (s-tyrol/tyrol_mix); though projecting it onto West Eurasia PCA (more pulls) that mostly applies to the cimbrians and sauris and lesser to sappada and timau; maybe that also overlaps with the origins of the former being more ambiguous than that of the latter

If they are Retoroman samples from North Italy and Switzerland available for G25? I know they will be user samples not academic.
Interesting how they are similar or not to Tyroleans?
