What Are You Listening To

First: this quartet is one of the greatest works of the early 20th century, and one of the pinnacles of chamber music, all eras combined. Second: I don't know anything about the Hanson quartet. Third: I know all the recordings of Zemlinsky's quartets, from the first, by the Lasalle quartet, centuries ago. Fourth: this interpretation, by this quartet of unknown kids, is simply overwhelming, sublime, as if burned from the inside, incomparable. I don't know what spirit came to inhabit them that evening, perhaps that of Zemlinsky? If you don't have the taste for this music, or don't have the time (what a shame!), listen to the last three minutes, say from 38:00. The first violin, who we wondered from the start when he was going to slip from his chair, we wonder when he will start to levitate. It’s a great, rare moment of music.
