Coming Soon: Y-DNA Haplogroups for Family Finder
(04-11-2024, 09:09 PM)rmstevens2 Wrote: A fourth cousin of mine on my mother's side, a Y-DNA relative of my maternal grandfather with his surname, just got his Family Finder Y haplogroup assignment: R-Z253.

That's not as much resolution as I had hoped for, but it's not too bad. R-Z253 is upstream of the current terminal SNP for that line:  R-FT418639. So, the result is consistent.

Otherwise, no big excitement. I was waiting for that one, so it is good to see, but none of the others I am waiting for got their results yet.

No more than every 10th of my matches got FF assignment up to this point. Very, very slow progress.

Where do you guys see that info from?

If you keep track of the public haplogroup tree you can see how many new kits are added to the tree. Usually a few hundred kits are added to the tree each week, but when FF kits are added it has been several thousand.

Yesterday the number of kits in the tree went from 298.711 to 301.766

For what it's worth, my dad just got his FF prediction yesterday on 11 April 2024. For reference, he was in Batch 1153 which was batched 21 December 2020. So, they are now back over 3 years.

As far as his assigned haplo, he's I-L338, formed about 950 BCE. It is about 8 or 9 SNP blocks (about 45 SNPs) above my terminal. I knew this would be where he landed after reviewing the list of potential SNPs that could be discovered by the FamilyFinder chip.

It will also be cool when the mtDNA results from Family Finder start rolling in. I'm looking forward to that (not sure when it will start though).

Over the last 3 days, I have seen about 30 men with their Y haplotype updated via their Family Finder SNPs.

My total of men with Y haplos increased by 11, one of whom is a new tester, but the other 10 appear to be updates from existing kits.

My number of R-M269 men (from a Y12 to Y111 test) dropped by 12, presumably because they were updated and refined.

I dont have stats, but I presume the number of men in other basic clades besides R-M269 decreased (via refining) as well, so perhaps another 10 men.

There are still hundreds of men on my FF match list to update. e.g. I have almost 400 R-M269 to update. (These are FTDNA testers, not Autosomal Transfers). Although I suspect many are from the older Family Finder V1 and I presume the updating will be more basic compared to the V2 GSA chip.

Looking forward to that, too. I have one match that I am in dire need of knowing the mtDNA, but I am scared that I will strike out even if I offer to pay.

I forgot whether people have to opt out or opt in. What's the case with the projected Y-Haplogroups?

I don't think they have to opt in or out. Probably a lot of people (most maybe) don't even know this is a thing.

There has been no change in my part of the tree, FGC12401, dated to 1050 BC by FTDNA.

IIRC there has been 16 members since Dec 2022.

My matches all skip the alphabet on their yDNA at L.

There are a few mtDNA H6a1a that just could possibly connect, but probably do not (I'm H6a1a8).

Thumbs Up
Both of my grandsons (the sons of my youngest son) got their Family Finder Y-DNA haplogroups today: R-BY166.

That's really not bad. It's upstream of my Big Y-700-determined terminal SNP like so:

P-P226>R-M207>R1-M173>R1b-M343>L754>L761>L389>P297>M269>L23>L51>P310>L151>P312>Z290>L21>

I have to look around and see if anything else has popped up, but those two results are cool.

In the last 3 days my branch got about 40 new members. That's significant.
Too bad I won't see most of them, only a fraction are STR matches. Speaking of my STR matches with a FF test, there is still a lot to be done.

I have gotten 30 new Family Finder haplotypes in the last 3 days and 60 over the last 4 or 5 days.

but....

I think its better to focus on your Y12 matches (with Family Finder updates).   These men have already matched you, even if just Y12, and tend to be skewed closer to your haplotype.    Whereas your Family Finder haplotypes will be all over the Y Tree.

I could go into great detail but regardless, at the end, the relevant matches will be a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a .....

Nevertheless, since FTDNA is processing 200,000 or 300,000 Family Finder men there is still a decent possibility of finding "A Few Good Men".

The key SNP for me from Family Finder jumped from 992 to 1029 two nights ago.  18 of these show up on my Y12 list.   (There were only 11 five days ago.)  So at least this fraction is bending favorably in my direction.

I also look at my Y25 list, but sadly the key Family Finder SNP has not shown up there.
