The genetic origin of the Goths

The Goths, an East Germanic people best known for being fierce adversaries of the Roman Empire, are mentioned in numerous ancient sources and played an important role in European history during the Migration Period. This article aims to explain their origin, ethnogenesis and tribal movements using newly published archaeogenetic data, archaeology and historical sources.

In summary, archaeological, historical and archaeogenetic evidence has proven beyond reasonable doubt that substantial migration from Southern Scandinavia led to the formation of the Wielbark culture. The immigrants brought with them new burial rites, cultural practices, and the Gothic language.

Exactly, I'm one of the owners of the site. Gothic is indeed a language long extinct, but the debate about their origins is one that has always generated great interest within Scandinavian academia and even outside of it, to the point where it was used rather maliciously by royalty to make territorial claims during the Thirty Years War. Historical oddities like the Gothicist movement eventually led to the state of the debate being dominated by incredibly stubborn diffusionist arguments which have persisted to this day, to the great annoyance of some (me included). Let's hope I managed to quote you properly now, Finn, as I still haven't gotten fully used to the quote system on this new site.
