That's why an over-simplistic utilization of the splitting Family Tree model is probelmatic. It often doesnt take into account ongoing contacct, koinization, dialect levelling (e.g. in proto-Germanic where there appear to have two flows of late PIE converging in Jutland from different directions).
I will always laugh when I see Don Ringe's reconstructions showing proto-Germanic close to proto-Albanian.
And given the lack of agreeableness amongst how linguists proposed internal family branching within IE, one can only conclude that linguistics is impotent to such matters.
