I think he underestimated the total population a bit and especially French population.

I have the following estimates for Canada within modern borders of provinces in 1822, excluding indigenous population:

Newfoundland 52228
Quebec 427465
Nova Scotia 106403
New Brunswick 69816
Ontario 139056
SPM 1354
Manitoba 2128
Prince Edward Island 24600
Labrador 1300
Saskatchewan 1300
Alberta 1300
British Columbia 200
Northwest Territories 525
Yukon 0
Nunavut 0

In total 827,675 colonial population (excluding indigenous population), which is 68,175 higher than Hassel's estimate.

I revise my estimate for Labrador in 1822 down to 750, the total is now 827,125. Still 67,625 higher than Hassel's figure.

Wow. The population of Quebec far exceeded that of Ontario.

I find it interesting the non-indigenous population in the modern Yukon and NWT was so low given that from my understanding of indigenous northwestern Canadians many are significantly admixed (with admix events, one assumes, go back several hundred years).

Do you have any GEDmatch kits etc. to support it? I found various NW Athabaskans from Canada on GEDmatch and they are pure-blooded. I posted them in my thread here:

I was just going by Wiki articles of notable indigenous NW Athabaskans in Canada. These people were either explicitly described as part-Euro or phenotypically appeared mixed (I know phenotype is a hot button issue here as it was on the last forum, but if they were full-blooded they probably wouldn't look pred. Euro).

There are even many mixed Inuits but this mixing happened in the 20th and 21st centuries, not earlier. Before that there were no Whites in Nunavut.

I even found a 1/2 Inuit 1/2 Black woman on GEDmatch, her:
